Chapter 17 - Sunday Dinner at the Townhouse

To celebrate our latest quarterly milestone, I decided to take a quiet Sunday off and drive over to my parents' townhouse for dinner.

The afternoon sun cast a warm golden glow across the quiet suburban street. When I stepped out of my car, carrying a fresh batch of homemade lemon bars, Dad met me at the front door with a welcoming smile, holding a newly crafted oak birdhouse in his hands.

“Look who’s here! The CEO of the tech world has deigned to grace us with her presence,” Dad joked warmly, pulling me into a tight hug.

Inside, Mom was setting the dining table with her favorite porcelain plates, the rich, comforting scent of roasted rosemary chicken filling the kitchen. There was no tension, no unspoken expectations, and no financial anxiety lingering in the air.

As we sat down around the table, Mom poured iced tea into our glasses and looked across at me with deep, quiet pride.

“You know, Mara, watching you over the last year... it’s like watching someone completely transform into who they were always meant to be,” Mom said softly. “You carry such a steady peace about you now.”

“It took a lot of debugging, Mom,” I smiled, raising my glass. “But I finally figured out the right architecture.”

Dad raised his glass to mine, his eyes shining with respect. “To clear skies and solid foundations.”
