Chapter 13 - An Unplanned Reunion

By late autumn, Pinebridge Systems had solidified its position as the premier independent infrastructure provider in the country.
The botched corporate intimidation attempt by Vanguard Tech had backfired spectacularly; paralyzed by their own internal security flaws after our counter-hack, their board was forced to buy out their shares in our partnership at a severe discount, leaving us with absolute control and a massive cash injection.
One afternoon, while reviewing thermal stress logs in the primary assembly lab, my phone buzzed on the workbench.
It was a text from Caleb.
> “Mara, I know you’re busy running the tech world, but I’m in downtown Austin for a logistics convention. If you have ten minutes for a coffee, I’d love to drop by.”
I stared at the screen for a moment. Ever since our brief encounters earlier in the year, Caleb had genuinely committed to his new path—working hard, attending therapy, and keeping his distance from toxic family baggage.
I replied with our headquarters' address: “Come on by. Meeting room B.”
Twenty minutes later, Caleb walked into my office. He looked healthier, his posture upright and devoid of the desperate, hollow ambition that used to define him.
“Nice place,” Caleb said, looking around the sleek, minimalist office with genuine admiration. “You built quite an empire, Mara.”

“I built a functional system, Caleb,” I corrected gently, gesturing for him to sit down. “What brings you to Austin?”
