Chapter 11 - Counter-Protocol

The digital assault on Vanguard Tech’s infrastructure wasn't an act of malicious hacking; it was a surgical counter-maneuver.

Sitting at the small writing desk in our Madrid hotel room, the glow of my laptop screen illuminating the darkened interior, my fingers flew across the keyboard. Through the backdoor telemetry link we had embedded in our hardware diagnostic chips, I bypassed their perimeter firewalls in less than ninety seconds.

Marcus’s voice crackled softly through my encrypted earpiece from Austin.

“Boss, I’m seeing their primary server cluster pinging red,” Marcus said, his tone a mix of disbelief and professional awe. “You’ve locked their logistics database. How did you get past their encryption keys so fast?”

“They used the same legacy subroutines in their defense-contractor architecture that we phased out two years ago,” I replied calmly, watching streams of data cascade down my terminal window. “Arrogance makes for lazy engineering.”

With a final keystroke, I executed a remote diagnostic lock on Vanguard’s core logistics routing software, freezing their supply chain across three states. Then, I embedded a silent, unerasable digital watermark inside their main server log: a single, subtle vector graphic of an F-16 silhouette, accompanied by my old military call sign—*Spectre*.

Let them look at the screen and realize who was really holding the stick.

“That ought to keep their board of directors busy for the next forty-eight hours,” I muttered, closing the terminal connection.

“Message received, Major,” Marcus chuckled on the other end. “Enjoy the rest of your vacation.”
