Chapter 8 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE FLOORBOARDS

The hidden room beneath the cottage was larger than I expected.
Shelves lined every wall. Files stacked neatly in boxes. More notebooks. Maps. Photographs. Recording equipment. A small generator humming quietly in the corner. It was a command center. A fortress.
Claire had built this place knowing she might one day need it. Knowing she might have to fight.
Sophie sat on a cushion in the corner, quietly coloring, while Thomas and I spread documents across a long wooden table.
“Everything she gathered is here,” Thomas said, opening folder after folder. “Financial records, communications, surveillance footage, witness statements, names and locations of The Circle’s most powerful members. Enough to put them all behind bars—if we can get it to the right people without getting killed first.”
I picked up a thick file marked with the Circle’s symbol. Names I had never heard of, but Thomas recognized instantly.
“Vanessa,” I said suddenly, pulling out a page. “Is she part of them?”
Thomas glanced at the name and nodded gravely.
“She was sent to you, Adrian. Months before Claire died. They planted her in your home to watch. To search. To report back. She knew nothing about the safe code—only that Claire had hidden something valuable. That is why she was so desperate to destroy the drawing. She knew it was the key.”
My stomach turned.
“She was never my partner. Never my friend. Just… a spy.”
“Sent to destroy what Claire built,” Thomas finished. “And when she failed to find the evidence… she led them straight to the bank. And now she will lead them here if she can.”
I thought of the days Vanessa had spent in my home. The meals. The conversations. The way she had pretended to care about Sophie.
Rage burned hot and sharp inside me.
“She will pay,” I said quietly.
“She will,” Thomas agreed. “But not before we use her. She knows when they are coming. She knows what they are planning. And she knows exactly how dangerous this is going to get.”
He pulled out a large, folded map of the surrounding woods and laid it flat on the table.
“Claire marked everything,” he said, tracing red lines through the trees. “Watch posts. Hidden cameras. Escape routes. Places to hide supplies. And one final note… written on the back.”
He turned the map over.
*If you are reading this, then I am gone. Trust Thomas. Trust Adrian. And remember—The Circle cannot be destroyed from the outside. They must be brought down from within.*
I looked up at Thomas.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas hesitated, his expression darkening.
“It means Claire realized something before she died. The evidence alone isn’t enough. They have too much money. Too many friends in high places. Too many ways to bury the truth. To truly defeat them… someone has to take Claire’s place. Someone has to get close enough to strike at the very heart of The Circle.”
“Someone like Vanessa?” I asked.
Thomas shook his head slowly.
“Someone who knows their secrets. Someone they already fear. Someone who carries the bloodline of one of their oldest families.”
He looked toward Sophie.
My blood ran cold.
“No,” I said instantly. “Absolutely not. She is six years old.”
“Not yet,” Thomas said quickly. “And perhaps never. But Adrian… Claire was the daughter of one of their most powerful founding families. They believe her bloodline gives her authority. They believe her child… belongs to them by right. Which means they will come for Sophie. And when they do… she will be the bait.”
“I will not use my daughter as bait,” I snapped, standing up.
“Nor will I ask you to,” Thomas said calmly. “But we must be ready. We must know their plans. And we must understand what they truly want. Because it isn’t just the evidence, Adrian. It’s Sophie.”
He reached beneath the table and pulled out a heavy, sealed envelope.
“Claire wrote this final letter the day she died. She told me to give it to you only when you had seen everything else. When you were ready to accept the full truth.”
I took the envelope. My hands trembled. I broke the seal and read.
*My dearest Adrian,*
*By now you know everything. About my past. About The Circle. About why I hid the truth. And now you know the hardest part of all.*
*They will not stop searching until they have Sophie. She carries their blood. She carries their name. And they believe she carries a birthright that belongs to them alone—one that gives her power over everything they control.*
*That is why I hid the evidence. That is why I scattered the clues. That is why I left her in your care. Because I knew you would protect her with your life. And because I knew you would teach her something The Circle never understood: how to love.*
*Do not let them take her, Adrian. Do not let them turn her into what they turned me into. Keep her safe. Keep her loved. And when the time comes… give her the choice to decide who she will be.*
*I love you both more than I can ever say. Be brave. Be strong. And never forget… I am always with you.*
*Claire.*
I folded the letter slowly and tucked it inside my shirt, against my heart.
Sophie looked up from her coloring.
“Daddy?”
I walked over and knelt beside her.
“Everything is okay, sweetheart.”
She looked at Thomas, then back at me.
“Grandpa says the bad people are coming.”
I hesitated.
“People are coming who want to take things that don’t belong to them,” I said carefully. “But we are going to be ready. And we are going to protect each other.”
Sophie nodded solemnly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the locket.
“Mommy is with us,” she said. “So we will be fine.”
I looked at Thomas. He watched us, his face grave.
“Six days,” Thomas said quietly. “That is what the message said. And they always keep their word.”
I stood up and walked back to the map. I traced the red lines Claire had drawn through the woods. The watch posts. The escape routes. The hidden places.
“Then we prepare,” I said. “We set up surveillance. We secure the perimeter. And when they come… we will be waiting.”
Thomas looked at me, a flicker of genuine respect in his eyes.
May you like
“Claire said you would say that. She said you were the kind of man who stands his ground.”
“I am the kind of father who protects his daughter,” I replied. “And no one—no matter how powerful, no matter how dangerous—will take her from me.”
