Chapter 16 - THE TRUTH COMES TO LIGHT

We walked back to the cottage in silence.

Vanessa’s body remained where she had fallen—covered with a blanket, waiting for morning. The horror of what had happened weighed on all of us. One minute she had been our enemy. The next… she had given everything to save us.

I opened the hidden panel and climbed down.

Sophie was awake. She stood beside Thomas, her eyes wide and frightened. When she saw me, she ran forward and threw her arms around me.

“Daddy! I heard shots! I was so scared!”

I held her tight.

“It’s okay, baby. It’s over for tonight.”

She pulled back slightly and looked past me. Her gaze settled on the Guardian standing in the doorway.

The old man stood very still. He looked at her as if seeing a miracle. Tears glistened in his eyes.

Sophie looked up at me.

“Who is he?”

I took a deep breath.

“He is… a very old friend of your mommy’s. He has been waiting a very long time to meet you.”

Sophie studied him carefully. Then she stepped forward, still holding my hand.

“Did you know my mommy when she was little?”

The Guardian nodded, his voice trembling.

“I did. She was very brave. Just like you.”

Sophie thought about that. Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out her drawing. She held it out to him.

“This is us. Mommy is in the sky. Watching over us.”

The Guardian took the drawing with trembling hands. He looked at it for a long time. Then he looked at me.

“She has Claire’s heart,” he whispered. “And her courage.”

He turned back to Sophie.

“Your mommy told me something before she went away,” he said gently. “She told me that you are the bravest girl she ever knew. And that you would always choose to do the right thing.”

Sophie smiled—a small, shy smile.

“I try.”

The Guardian knelt down so he was level with her.

“I know you do. And I want you to know… you are not alone. You have family. People who love you. People who will always protect you. No matter what.”

Sophie looked at him, then at me.

“Is he my family too?”

I nodded.

“He is, Sophie. Very close family.”

She stepped forward and hugged him.

The Guardian closed his eyes. He wrapped his arms around her carefully, gently, as if afraid she might break. I watched them—this ancient, powerful man and this tiny child, bound together by blood and loss—and felt my heart ache with a thousand conflicting emotions.

When Sophie pulled back, the Guardian wiped his face quickly.

“I must speak with your daddy and Grandpa now, little one. Will you be all right resting here for a little while longer?”

Sophie nodded. She climbed back onto her cushion and picked up her crayons.

“I’ll be fine. Mommy is watching. And I have my locket.”

We stepped outside the hidden room and closed the panel.

The Guardian leaned against the wall, suddenly looking older and more frail than before.

“Marcus will not stop,” he said quietly. “He has copies of the evidence. He will use it to seize control. To blackmail members. To build his own power base. And he will come for Sophie. As soon as he feels strong enough… he will return.”

“Then we destroy him first,” I said. “We publish the truth. Every name. Every crime. Every secret. We bring the whole structure down.”

The Guardian shook his head.

“If we do that… we destroy innocent people alongside the guilty. Families. Children. People who have been trapped just as Claire was trapped. Marcus wants total collapse. We want justice.”

“Then what do we do?” Thomas asked.

The Guardian looked at me.

“We use the evidence differently. We expose Marcus. We prove his treachery. And we let the members choose who leads them. If they accept the truth… The Circle can be reformed. If they do not… then yes. We bring it all down.”

He paused.

“But to do that… we need the originals. And we need something else Claire hid. Something she kept from everyone but me.”

“What is it?” I asked.

The Guardian looked me straight in the eye.

“A recording. The final confession. Made by Claire herself. Detailing every crime. Every betrayal. Every name. And specifically… Marcus’s treachery.”

My breath caught.

“Where is it?”

The Guardian pulled a small, sealed envelope from his pocket.

“She sent it to me the day before she died. With instructions to open it only if the worst happened. If Marcus betrayed us. If Sophie’s life was in danger.”

May you like

He opened the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of paper.

“Claire’s instructions say the recording is hidden inside the locket. The one she gave to Sophie.”
