Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

We waited through the afternoon in silence.
I spent the time reading every page of Claire’s notebook carefully. Names, dates, codes, locations, patterns of behavior. She had documented everything with terrifying precision. She had known Marcus was a traitor for years. She had known Vanessa was being sent to spy on us. She had known she was being watched.
And yet she had stayed. She had stayed to give Sophie a home. A father. A childhood.
She had sacrificed herself to buy us time.
As the sun began to set, Thomas stood up.
“There is one more thing,” he said. “Something Claire told me only days before she died. Something she wrote down but never put in the notebook.”
He pulled a small, folded paper from his pocket and handed it to me.
I unfolded it. Two names were written in Claire’s handwriting.
*Sophie’s birthright — The Circle’s greatest secret.*
And beneath it, a single sentence that turned my blood to ice.
*Sophie is not just a descendant. She is the heir. They want her not to control her… but to replace their dying leader.*
I stared at the words.
“Replace?”
Thomas nodded gravely.
“The Circle is ruled by one person. Known only as The Guardian. For decades, he has pulled every string. Ordered every death. Controlled every secret. But he is old. Dying. And he has no children of his own.”
He paused, his voice heavy.
“He chose Claire. Years ago. He intended to train her. To prepare her. To make her his successor. That is why he let her live so long. That is why he never sent men to kill her. He wanted her to return. To take her place at his side.”
“But Claire escaped,” I whispered.
“Claire chose love instead of power,” Thomas said. “And then she had Sophie. And suddenly… The Circle had something even better. A child born of their bloodline. Young. Malleable. Uncorrupted by their wars. If they can take Sophie… if they can raise her in their image… she will become the next Guardian. She will rule everything.”
I gripped the paper until my knuckles turned white.
“They want to turn my daughter into their leader?”
“They want to mold her into what they need,” Thomas said. “They believe her blood gives her a claim that cannot be challenged. Every member of The Circle would follow her. Every secret would be revealed to her. Every door would open.”
“And Marcus knows this?”
“Marcus serves the current Guardian,” Thomas said. “He has been searching for Sophie all along. Not just for the evidence. But to deliver her to the old man. To ensure the succession. To secure his own place in the new order.”
I stood up and walked to the corner where Sophie sat sleeping on a cushion. I knelt beside her. She looked so peaceful. So innocent.
They wanted to take this child. They wanted to steal her away and turn her into something cold, powerful, dangerous. They wanted to erase her heart and replace it with their own darkness.
Claire had known. That was why she had hidden everything. That was why she had scattered the clues. That was why she had left Sophie with me.
She knew I would die before letting them turn her into a monster.
I stood up and turned back to Thomas.
“They will not have her.”
“Then we must destroy The Circle before they can take her,” Thomas said. “We must expose every member. Freeze every account. Unseal every secret. We must bring the entire structure crumbling down before they can get their hands on her.”
“And the Guardian?” I asked.
Thomas looked at me steadily.
“Claire wrote one final thing. If we cannot stop them any other way… we must go directly to him. We must confront him. And we must make him choose between his legacy… and his crimes.”
“Where is he?”
May you like
Thomas hesitated.
“Claire wrote that too. But she said to reveal it only when all other options are gone. Because Adrian… the Guardian is closer than any of us ever imagined.”
