Chapter 15 - THE LOSS THAT HURTS MOST

“You won’t do it,” I said. “If you destroy everything… you lose what you came for.”

Marcus smiled.

“I have copies, Adrian. Every file. Every photograph. Every recording. Claire made the mistake of trusting me. She let me help her organize it all. And I copied everything before she died.”

My blood ran cold.

He had been one step ahead all along.

“Hand over the originals,” Marcus said. “And leave. That is my final offer.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You will not win. The members will never follow you. You have no blood claim. No right to lead.”

“I will buy their loyalty,” Marcus said. “With Claire’s evidence… I control their secrets. I control their lives. They will obey me… or I will destroy them one by one.”

He looked at the Guardian.

“Your time is finished. And your precious heir… will never be found.”

The old man stepped forward, trembling with rage.

“You would destroy your own people?”

“I would build something better,” Marcus said. “A world where power belongs to those who earn it… not those who are born into it.”

He raised his hand to signal his men.

But before anyone could move, Vanessa stepped forward.

“Stop,” she said.

Everyone turned to look at her.

Vanessa stood facing Marcus, her head held high.

“I helped you,” she said. “I lied. I spied. I hurt a child. Because you promised me safety. Because you said Adrian would be destroyed… and I would be free.”

She looked at me, her eyes filled with tears.

“I am sorry, Adrian. For everything. For the drawing. For Sophie. For all of it.”

Marcus frowned.

“Vanessa… step aside.”

“No,” she said. “Claire gave me a message before she died. She told me I still had a choice. And I chose wrong. But I can still help stop you.”

She pulled a small device from her pocket and held it up.

“Claire gave this to me. It wipes every copy of the evidence you stole. Every file. Every backup. Gone in seconds.”

Marcus’s face darkened.

“Vanessa… do not.”

“Leave this place,” she said. “Or I press it.”

For a moment, Marcus hesitated. Then his expression hardened completely.

“You would trade your life for theirs?”

“I would trade anything to make amends,” Vanessa said.

Marcus reached into his coat and drew a weapon.

“Then make your peace.”

“NO!” I shouted.

The shot rang out.

Vanessa fell.

She dropped to her knees, clutching her chest. The device slipped from her hand and landed in the grass.

“Vanessa!” I ran to her.

She looked up at me, her face pale and streaked with tears. She reached out and gripped my hand.

“Protect her,” she whispered. “Protect Sophie.”

“I will,” I promised.

She smiled—a faint, sad smile. Then her hand fell away.

Marcus turned to his men.

“Take the originals. Kill them all.”

But the Guardian stepped forward, and for the first time, I saw true power in his frail frame.

“Stand down,” he commanded.

His men hesitated.

“This man has betrayed us all,” the Guardian said. “He has killed one of his own. He has threatened our future. Seize him.”

Confusion erupted. Half the men moved toward Marcus. Half toward us. Shouts filled the air. Another shot rang out.

Marcus backed away toward the boat.

“This is not finished!” he shouted. “I will find Sophie! And I will take what is mine!”

He jumped into the boat and gunned the engine. It sped away into the darkness, vanishing instantly.

The Guardian turned to his men.

“Search the area. Find him. And bring him to me alive.”

They scattered into the woods.

I knelt beside Vanessa in the grass. She was gone. I closed her eyes gently, feeling a terrible, heavy grief settle over me. She had made terrible choices. But in the end… she had chosen redemption.

The Guardian stood beside me.

“She was not entirely evil,” he said quietly. “She was lost. And Claire knew it. That is why she never gave up on her.”

I stood up slowly.

May you like

“She gave her life to save us.”

“And her sacrifice will not be forgotten,” the Guardian said. He looked toward the cottage. “Now… take me to my great-granddaughter.”
