Chapter 8 - The Price of RedemptionWhile Vanessa was busy fighting fires at her real estate firm, my mother made a desperate attempt at damage control.

Wednesday evening, as I was wrapping up my work at the corporate office, my phone rang with a restricted caller ID. I ignored it, letting it roll to voicemail. A minute later, a text message popped up on my screen.
From Mom:
“Maya, please answer me. We need to talk. What you did to Vanessa was cruel and unnecessary. We are family. Can we please sit down over dinner in Sacramento and discuss how we can repair this?”
I stared at the screen, shaking my head slightly at the utter lack of self-awareness. Even now, after everything, she still framed herself as the aggrieved party seeking to "repair" a relationship she had spent years actively destroying.
I tapped out a brief, definitive reply:
“There is nothing to discuss, Mom. You spent three years defining my worth by what I didn't have. Now you can live with the reality of what I actually built. Do not contact me again.”

I hit send, and then blocked her number permanently.
It wasn't done out of anger. Anger requires an emotional investment. This was simply maintenance—sweeping away the residual dust of a toxic environment so I could focus on what truly mattered.
