Chapter 3 - The Audit TrailBy Sunday morning, the illusion of my family’s untouchable superiority had completely unraveled behind the heavy mahogany doors of the Presidential Villa.

I sat comfortably in the glass-enclosed atrium of the resort’s private executive lounge, sipping black coffee and reviewing quarterly logistics reports on my tablet. The morning sun sparkled brilliantly across the deep blue expanse of Lake Tahoe, framed by majestic, snow-capped peaks.

My phone buzzed against the table.

It was an incoming call from an internal extension: Daniel Reeves.

“Good morning, Daniel,” I answered.

“Good morning, Ms. Williams,” Daniel’s crisp, professional voice filled the line. “I thought you’d want an update on the executive suite occupants. Mrs. Williams and Ms. Vanessa attempted to book a private yacht excursion and a full-day spa takeover at 8:00 AM.”

I raised an eyebrow. “And?”

“And when the concierge processed their request against the folio guidelines, they were informed that while their room and basic dining were covered by your courtesy pass, supplemental luxury excursions required direct executive sign-off or personal payment.”

Daniel paused, and I could hear the faint sound of him smiling on the other end.

“According to the front desk, Ms. Vanessa threw a minor tantrum, claiming her credit card was declined because of a 'system glitch,' and demanded to speak directly to management regarding your ‘unprofessional sabotage.’”

“Let me guess,” I murmured, taking a slow sip of coffee. “She threatened to call corporate?”

“She did, Ms. Williams. She shouted that she personally knows high-level investors in Azure Hospitality and would have my job by noon.” Daniel laughed softly. “Shall I send security to escort them out, or would you prefer to let them sweat a little longer?”

“Let them sweat, Daniel,” I replied calmly. “They’ve spent three years building a castle out of sand. Let the tide come in naturally.”

As I hung up, my phone buzzed again immediately.

This time, it wasn't Daniel.

Caller ID: Mom.

I stared at the screen as it blinked rhythmically against the wooden table. I let it ring out entirely, watching the screen go dark, before tossing it casually back onto the table.

They were finally starting to realize that the world they thought they controlled didn't belong to them at all.
