Chapter 7 - Whispers in the IndustryBy Tuesday morning, the ripple effect of the weekend’s confrontation had begun spreading through high-society real estate and corporate circles in Sacramento and San Francisco.

News travels fast when egos are shattered.

I was sitting in my private office at the Azure Heights corporate headquarters, reviewing architectural renderings for our upcoming Pacific Northwest resort expansion, when my administrative assistant buzzed through.

“Ms. Williams, you have a priority call on line two,” she announced professionally. “It’s Richard Vance, Managing Partner of Vance & Sterling Commercial Real Estate.”

I raised an eyebrow. Richard Vance was Vanessa’s boss—a notoriously ruthless, old-school broker who demanded absolute perfection from his senior associates.

“Put him through,” I instructed, clicking the speakerphone.

“Maya? Good morning,” Richard’s voice boomed through the office, uncharacteristically cautious. “I hope I’m not interrupting your morning, but I received a rather... frantic inquiry from one of our senior associates regarding an administrative routing error on a resort folio.”

“Are you referring to Vanessa Williams, Richard?” I asked calmly, leaning back in my leather ergonomic chair.

There was a brief, telling pause on the other end of the line.

“Ah. So you are aware,” Richard cleared his throat. “She came into the office this morning in absolute hysterics, claiming her corporate commission account was suddenly docked nearly four thousand dollars for unauthorized resort charges at Azure Heights. She’s... well, she’s threatening legal action against the resort for harassment.”

I let out a quiet, cold chuckle.

“Harassment, Richard? Her mother and sister attempted to run up nearly thirty thousand dollars in complimentary VIP upgrades under a restricted executive pass, and when the system flagged their supplementary luxuries, they tried to bully the front desk staff.”

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the glass desk.

“If Vanessa wishes to pursue legal action, my legal team will be more than happy to present the signed audit logs, the CCTV footage of the lobby confrontation, and the itemized receipts directly to your firm’s ethics committee. Would you like me to have Marcus Sterling forward those files to your corporate email right now?”

Another long pause. I could practically hear the cold sweat breaking out on Richard’s forehead as he calculated the catastrophic PR nightmare of backing Vanessa’s entitlement against the majority owner of Azure Hospitality.

“No, no, absolutely not necessary, Ms. Williams,” Richard stammered quickly, his tone shifting instantly into groveling diplomacy. “Consider the matter handled internally. I will personally ensure Miss Williams understands the gravity of her professional conduct. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience she may have caused your establishment.”

“Thank you, Richard. Have a productive week,” I said crisply, and hung up the phone.

Another brick pulled from their fragile tower.
