Chapter 12 - Scaling Up the Infrastructure

By early December, Pinebridge Systems was operating at a velocity I had only previously dreamed of.

The multi-year hardware contract with the Dallas cloud-computing firm had pushed our production volume up by four hundred percent. To meet the demand, I officially hired my first two full-time systems engineers—Marcus and Elena, two brilliant former university lab partners who brought sharp technical skills and zero corporate drama to the table.

My new downtown warehouse space was a masterpiece of industrial efficiency. Rows of server racks hummed with synchronized precision under optimal cooling protocols, and the workbench stations were equipped with high-grade soldering stations, oscilloscopes, and automated diagnostic rigs.

One afternoon, as Elena and I were reviewing thermal stress logs on a batch of enterprise-grade blade servers, she looked up from her monitor with an impressed grin.

“You know, Mara, the architecture of this pipeline is brilliant,” Elena said. “Who designed your custom load-balancing scripts?”

“I wrote them three years ago in my bedroom while my family thought I was just playing video games,” I replied casually, swapping out a diagnostic drive.

Elena laughed. “Well, your bedroom hobby is currently processing data for half the logistics firms in Texas. Are you ever going to take a vacation, boss? You’ve been working seventy-hour weeks since the move.”

I paused, leaning back against the edge of the workbench. She wasn't wrong. Since moving out, my entire life had become consumed by the sheer, exhilarating momentum of building my enterprise. But unlike the old days, I wasn't hiding behind my screens. I was creating.

“Actually,” I said, smiling faintly, “I’m thinking about taking a long weekend. Maybe rent a cabin out in the Hill Country. Just unplug for forty-eight hours.”

“Do it,” Elena insisted. “The hardware won't run away.”
