Chapter 10 - The Independent Circuit

It was the Friday before Thanksgiving when I finally drove out to Maple Street one last time.

The moving truck had cleared out the last of my parents' belongings weeks ago. The house was completely empty, echoing with the hollow sound of footsteps on bare hardwood floors as I walked through the empty rooms with a roll of blue painter’s tape and a clipboard, checking off the final inspection items for the real estate agent.

I stopped outside my old bedroom—the room with three monitors, the hum of cooling fans, and the cardboard boxes stacked to the ceiling.

The room was bare now. Just white walls, a clean carpet, and the afternoon sunlight streaming through the window, casting a warm, unobstructed square of light across the floor.

I stood there for a long moment, remembering the girl who used to sit in the dark behind that closed door, soldering motherboards and ignoring the noise of the world outside.

Back then, I thought I was hiding. I thought my isolation was a shield against people who didn't understand me.

But looking back, I realized that room wasn't a hiding place at all. It was an incubator. It was where I learned how to build something solid, something unshakeable, something that could weather any storm or family betrayal without breaking.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out. A text from Mom:

> “Turkey is in the oven, Dad is making his famous cranberry sauce, and we’re waiting for you, Mara. Drive safe.”

I smiled, slipped the phone back into my pocket, and turned off the overhead light.

I walked down the stairs, pulled the heavy front door shut behind me, and locked it with a crisp, definitive click.

I didn't look back as I walked to my car. The past was settled, the accounts were balanced, and the future was wide open, running at full clock speed on a completely custom build.
