Chapter 8 - Clearing the Ledger

Silence hung in the kitchen for a long moment, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator.

I looked at my mother—not with anger or bitterness anymore, but with a strange, detached clarity. The anger I had carried for a decade had required energy to maintain, and suddenly, I realized I didn't have any left to spend on resentment.

“I don’t want an apology, Mom,” I said quietly, walking over to sit at the table opposite her. “And I’m not going to undo the board’s decisions. Harrington Home Group is running cleanly now, and it’s going to stay that way.”

Mom nodded slowly, wiping her eyes with a tissue. “I don't expect you to change anything. Arthur told me about the new community housing grants and the operational reforms. You’re running the company with a heart your father never had.”

“Business isn’t just about crushing competitors, Mom,” I said softly. “It’s about building something sustainable. Something that doesn't collapse the moment pressure hits.”

She reached across the table, hesitantly placing her hand over mine. Her fingers were cold.

“Can we... can we try to rebuild things, Emily? Just you and me?” she asked, her voice small. “No boardrooms. No socialite galas. Just family.”

I looked down at her hand, then back up to her face. The cycle of emotional distance didn't have to continue forever.

“We can try,” I said cautiously. “But it starts with honesty. No more pretending, no more side-taking.”

A wave of profound relief washed over Mom’s face, and she offered a watery, genuine smile. “I can live with those terms.”
