Chapter 18 - The Art of the Weekend

By Friday evening, the autumn air had grown brisk, carrying the unmistakable scent of approaching winter.
I left Harrington Towers at precisely 5:00 p.m., leaving the corporate empire humming smoothly under Harrison’s watchful eye.
When our sedan pulled up outside our Elm Street apartment, the evening felt warmer and cozier than ever. The radiator hummed its familiar song, and the kitchen table was quiet and clean.
I spent the evening cooking a simple meal, listening to the soft rustle of leaves outside my window, and reflecting on the journey that had brought me here.
Later, I sat out on the front porch with a mug of chamomile tea.
The neighborhood was quiet. The maple tree in our front yard had shed its final golden leaves, leaving stark, elegant branches silhouetted against the starlit sky.
My phone buzzed on the wooden railing.
It was a text message from Arthur:
> Checked the community housing grants report tonight. Elena would have been proud of you, Emily. Have a wonderful weekend.
I smiled softly, locked the phone, and set it down.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't looking over my shoulder, waiting for the next shoe to drop or bracing for the next insult from a family that measured human worth by bank accounts.

I had built a life on my own terms—honestly, fiercely, and with absolute integrity.
