Chapter 8 - The War Cabinet

By 4:00 AM, I was sitting in the high-rise office of Vance & Associates, a top-tier corporate litigation firm in the financial district.

My attorney, Marcus Vance, was a retired state prosecutor turned private litigator—a man with a silver beard, razor-sharp eyes, and zero tolerance for white-collar corruption. Sitting next to him was Detective Frank Miller from the County Financial Crimes Unit, whom Marcus had personally called out of bed.

I laid everything on the mahogany conference table:

The original forged Power of Attorney.

The fraudulent medical evaluations signed by two local physicians.

The pre-filled intake forms for Pinecrest Manor.

The printed email chain explicitly detailing the conspiracy to defraud my mother.

The USB drive containing the full CAD files and internal financial estimates for Willowbrook Estates.

Detective Miller put on a pair of latex gloves and carefully inspected the Power of Attorney. He adjusted his glasses, scanning the signature.

"This signature was notarized by a notary public named Arthur Pendelton," Miller noted, pointing his pen at the gold seal. "Pendelton happens to be the chief paralegal at Richard Montgomery's development firm."

"It's a textbook conspiracy to commit grand larceny, real estate fraud, and forgery," Marcus Vance said, leaning back in his leather chair with a dark, satisfied grin. "They didn't just break civil laws; they committed felony fraud across state lines when they sent those intake forms to Pinecrest Manor in North Carolina."

"What’s our move, Marcus?" I asked, my hands clasped tightly on the table.

"If we just file a civil lawsuit, Richard Montgomery will use his deep pockets to drag this out in court for five years while trying to intimidate your mother," Marcus explained. "We don't give them time to build a defense. We hit them simultaneously on three fronts: criminal, civil, and public relations."
