Chapter 19 - Shadows in the Rearview

Three years after the trial, Richard Montgomery was granted early parole due to failing health.

Upon his release, stripped of his business licenses, his wealth, and his social standing, he moved into a quiet retirement community funded by a small, exempt pension account his lawyers had managed to salvage from the bankruptcy proceedings.

One autumn afternoon, while attending a regional planning conference in the city, I saw him sitting on a park bench near the courthouse. He was thinner, his hair entirely silver, leaning heavily on a wooden cane.

I stopped a few paces away. He turned his head and recognized me instantly.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The silence between us wasn't filled with the burning anger of the past, but with the cold, absolute finality of time.

"Charles," he said, his voice raspy and thin.

"Richard," I acknowledged calmly.

He looked at my suit, then at the leather portfolio under my arm stamped with the seal of the County Planning Commission. He swallowed hard, his eyes dropping to the pavement.

"You destroyed everything I built," he whispered, though there was no strength behind the accusation.

May you like

"No, Richard," I replied softly, looking down at the man who had once tried to erase my family's existence. "You built a house out of cards and blamed the wind when it fell. I just protected what was mine."

I turned and walked toward the courthouse steps, leaving him alone on the bench under the falling autumn leaves. I didn't look back.
