Chapter 10 - The Ambush at the Club
By 1:00 PM, Richard Montgomery was hosting his quarterly executive luncheon at the Oakridge Country Club—the very place where his wife had suggested my mother was "unsuited" to dine.
The dining room was filled with local politicians, bank executives, and high-society figures. Richard was at the head table, holding a glass of scotch, holding court about his firm's upcoming expansion plans.
The heavy double glass doors of the dining room swung open.
I walked in, dressed in a tailored navy suit, accompanied by Marcus Vance and Detective Frank Miller in full police uniform.
The low chatter in the room quickly died down as heads turned toward us. Richard’s smile froze mid-sentence. His glass paused halfway to his mouth.
"Charles?" Richard set his glass down, trying to maintain his aristocratic composure as he stood up. "What is the meaning of this interruption? This is a private event."
"It was a private event, Richard," Marcus Vance announced, his voice carrying clearly across the silent dining room. "Until the County Sheriff’s Department issued a felony warrant for your arrest."
Gasps echoed through the dining room. Several bank executives at Richard's table immediately stood up and stepped away from him.
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Richard Montgomery, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit real estate fraud, forgery of legal documents, and filing false medical affidavits," Miller said neutrally, turning Richard around and pulling his hands behind his back.
"This is an outrage!" Richard bellowed, his face flushing bright red as the cuffs clicked around his wrists. "Do you know who I am? Charles, you bitter little bastard! You think you can destroy my family because my daughter dumped you?!"
I stepped right up to him, looking him dead in the eye while two hundred of his peers watched in utter shock.
"Your daughter didn't dump me, Richard. I threw her ring away," I said softly, my voice cold as ice. "And Willowbrook Farm isn't for sale. Not today. Not ever."
As the officers escorted a shouting, handcuffed Richard Montgomery out through the grand foyer of the country club, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was a text from Stephanie: “Charles, please... call me. We can fix this.”

I didn't answer. I deleted the contact, walked out into the sunlight, and drove home to the farm.
