Chapter 9 - The Trap is SprungWe gathered around the large mahogany table in the manor’s study, watching the live news feed streaming on Alexander’s encrypted laptop.

On the screen, Eleanor Sterling stood behind a bank of microphones on the steps of the New York County Supreme Court. She was flanked by her legal team, Arthur Caldwell, and the Chief of Police. She wore a black veil over her face, looking like a grieving matriarch in deep mourning.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Eleanor’s voice echoed through the laptop speakers, dripping with practiced heartbreak. "It is with a devastated heart that I announce that my son, Alexander Sterling, has fallen victim to a sophisticated, criminal extortion ring operated by an unhinged former employee named Emma Vance."

I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth.

"Miss Vance," Eleanor continued, dabbing a handkerchief at her eye-corners, "has a history of severe psychiatric instability following the tragic loss of her own child five years ago. She infiltrated our home using forged credentials, systematically brainwashed my young grandson, and early this morning, kidnapped Noah at gunpoint with the assistance of an armed accomplice."

"Gunpoint?!" I cried out, terror gripping my chest. "She's lying! She's completely insane!"

"A warrant for the arrest of Emma Vance has been issued across three states," the anchor on the television screen announced. "Law enforcement considers her armed, extremely dangerous, and mentally unstable. Anyone harboring her will be charged as an accessory to federal kidnapping."

Alexander slammed his hand onto the table, the wooden surface cracking under the impact. "She's framing you, Emma. She's painting you as an unfit, dangerous criminal so that if the truth about the baby-switching ever comes out, no court in the world will award custody to a 'convicted kidnapper'."

"It's worse than that," Claire added, pointing at the bottom ticker of the news screen. "Look at the legal filing."

A text banner scrolled across the bottom of the feed: STERLING TRUST BOARDS INITIATE EMERGENCY PSYCHIATRIC COMMITMENT FOR ALEXANDER STERLING.

"She’s declaring you mentally incompetent to run the estate, Alexander," Claire explained, her expression grim. "By claiming you are suffering from a psychotic break induced by grief over Victoria, Eleanor is legally reclaiming full guardianship over both you and Noah. Once she gets custody of Noah under a court order, she can ship him out of the country before any DNA test can be admitted into evidence."

The room fell into a terrifying silence. The trap was masterfully set. Eleanor had turned the entire law enforcement apparatus of the state into her personal hunting dogs.

"We need the original medical records from St. Jude's," I said, my mind racing through the chaos. "Not copies. Not digital files that her lawyers can claim are forged. We need the physical paper intake logs signed by Dr. Vance five years ago."

"Those records were moved to the central archive vault at St. Jude's Private Clinic three years ago," Alexander said, his eyes narrowing as a dark realization struck him. "The vault is underground. It requires biometric access."

"Who has the access key?" Claire asked.

Alexander looked up at me, a bitter, cold smile touching his lips. "Only two people ever had it. Dr. Vance... and my mother."

"Then we break into the clinic," I said without a second of hesitation.

Alexander stared at me in shock. "Emma, you heard the news. Every cop in New York is looking for your face. If you step foot back into Manhattan—"

"Noah is my son!" I yelled, stepping close to him, gripping the lapels of his jacket. "Five years ago, I let them tell me my baby was dead because I was weak and scared! I will never be weak again, Alexander! We go back to Manhattan tonight, we get those files, and we end this!"

Alexander looked into my eyes, seeing the fiery resolve that matched his own. Slowly, a dark, dangerous grin spread across his face.

"Tonight, then," Alexander said.
