Chapter 8 - The Safehouse in the PinesThe storm worsened as we crossed the state line into Connecticut. Deep snow lined the winding roads, filtering out the noise of the city and leaving behind a eerie, muffled silence.

Claire’s family safehouse was an old stone manor hidden deep within a forest of tall, snow-laden pine trees. Isolated, secure, and completely unlisted in public registries, it was the one place Eleanor Sterling’s reach could not immediately penetrate.

While Claire went to set up the secure satellite communications in the library, Alexander carried a fast-asleep Noah upstairs to one of the guest bedrooms.

I followed him up the wooden staircase, watching the back of his broad shoulders. He laid Noah down on the large canopy bed, gently pulling the heavy duvet over his small shoulders, removing his tiny shoes with a tenderness that contradicted his formidable exterior.

For a long moment, Alexander remained bent over the bed, his forehead resting lightly against Noah’s small hand.

"He looks like you when he sleeps," Alexander said quietly, not turning around.

I stepped up beside the bed, looking down at our son. "He has your mouth. And the way he furrows his eyebrows when he's thinking... that's all you."

Alexander stood up slowly, turning to face me in the dim light of the bedroom lamp. The distance between us suddenly felt dangerously small. The air was charged with a heavy, unexpressed grief, but beneath it lay a new, terrifying thread of intimacy.

"I’m sorry, Emma," Alexander whispered, his dark eyes searching my face. "I brought you into my home as a servant. I allowed my mother to treat you like a ghost. And all the while... I was raising your stolen child while you swept my floors."

"You didn't know, Alexander," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "You were a victim of Eleanor's cruelty just as much as I was. You loved him. You protected him when no one else would. That makes you his father."

Alexander looked down at his hands—the knuckles still bruised from the fight in the hallway. "I failed Victoria. I failed Noah. And five years ago, my family destroyed your life. I don't know how you can even stand to look at me."

Impulsively, I reached out and caught his hand, wrapping my fingers around his bruised knuckles. He flinched slightly at the touch, but he didn't pull away.

"Because when Noah walked across that ballroom last night," I murmured, looking up into his dark eyes, "he didn't just walk to me. He walked away from them. He chose us, Alexander. Both of us."

Alexander stared at me, his chest rising and falling in deep, heavy breaths. Slowly, he lifted his other hand, his warm, rough thumb brushing gently against my jawline, wiping away a dry tear stain. The contact sent an electric shiver straight down my spine.

"I won't let her take him from you again, Emma," Alexander vowed, his voice low and fiercely absolute. "Even if I have to burn the Sterling name to the ground."

Before I could answer, the door to the bedroom creaked open.

Claire stood in the hallway, her face grave, holding a satellite phone in her hand.

"Alexander," Claire said urgently. "You need to come downstairs. Right now. Your mother just called a press conference at the Manhattan District Attorney's office."
