Chapter 7 - The Enemy of My EnemyThe heavy scent of gasoline, damp concrete, and ozone hung in the underground air.

Alexander stepped out of the elevator first, placing his body as a human shield between the police officers and us. I backed into the shadows of the elevator frame, clutching Noah so tightly I could feel the rapid, frantic beat of his tiny heart against my ribs.

"Arthur," Alexander said, his voice dropping into that icy, calculated tone he used in boardroom takeovers. "You brought police officers into my private residence without a warrant. That is trespass."

"I don't need a warrant when a criminal maid is holding your son hostage!" Arthur Caldwell barked, his face flushed red above his tailored trench coat. Beside him, his daughter Vanessa stood in high heels, her arms crossed over a fur coat, a look of pure, triumphant malice on her face.

"She isn't holding him hostage," Alexander replied calmly, taking two steps forward. "She is his caregiver. And more importantly, Arthur, if you don't pull your men out of my driveway in thirty seconds, I will release the audit files from Caldwell Banking’s offshore accounts in Panama to the Department of Justice."

Arthur froze. His smug expression vanished, replaced by a sudden, sickly pallor. "You... you wouldn't dare. That would ruin both our stock prices!"

"Try me," Alexander threatened, pulling his smartphone from his pocket. "I have nothing left to lose tonight, Arthur. Do you?"

Before Arthur could respond, a sleek, silver Bentley coupe roared down the garage ramp, its tires screeching against the polished concrete. It swerved violently, cutting off the NYPD cruisers and blocking Arthur Caldwell’s line of sight.

The driver’s side window rolled down.

I gasped. Sitting behind the wheel was Claire Whitmore—the third woman from the Selection Ceremony. The quiet, icy heiress who had whispered to me before leaving the ballroom.

"Get in!" Claire yelled over the roar of the engine.

Alexander didn't ask questions. He grabbed my arm, pulling me and Noah toward the passenger side of the Bentley. He yanked the rear door open, pushing me inside first before sliding in beside us and slamming the door shut.

"Claire? What are you doing?!" Vanessa shrieked from across the garage, her voice echoing hysterically. "Are you out of your mind?!"

Claire didn't even look at her. She threw the Bentley into reverse, slammed her foot on the accelerator, and backed up the ramp at forty miles an hour, leaving Arthur Caldwell, Vanessa, and the police choking on a cloud of burning rubber.

We burst out of the gates of Sterling House into the blinding Manhattan snowstorm. Claire skillfully spun the wheel, straightening the car, and sped down 5th Avenue into the chaotic morning traffic.

"Where are we going?" Alexander demanded, leaning forward between the front seats, his hands still trembling slightly from the adrenaline.

"To my family's private estate in Greenwich," Claire answered calmly, checking her rearview mirror. "Eleanor has already placed a lock on your corporate accounts, Alexander. By noon, your credit cards will be frozen, and the media will be reporting that you’ve suffered a nervous breakdown."

"Why are you helping us, Claire?" I asked from the backseat, wrapping a cashmere blanket around Noah, who was finally drifting into an exhausted sleep against my lap. "You were supposed to marry Alexander. You were part of Eleanor’s plan."

Claire glanced at me through the rearview mirror, her dark eyes filled with a deep, haunting sadness.

"My mother died at St. Jude’s Hospital six years ago, Emma," Claire revealed softly. "Dr. Richard Vance was her lead physician. When I heard what happened in the ballroom last night—and when I saw the look in your eyes when you held Noah—I realized something was very wrong. I spent the last six hours digging through my family’s private medical archives."

She reached into her coat pocket and tossed a small silver USB flash drive into Alexander’s lap.

"That drive contains the internal audit records of St. Jude's Private Hospital from five years ago," Claire said. "Your mother didn't just bribe Dr. Vance to steal Emma's baby, Alexander. St. Jude's wasn't a hospital. It was an illegal fertility trafficking hub funded by the Caldwell and Sterling families."
