Chapter 6 - The Siege of Sterling House"Touch him and you die," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register so low and lethal that even the two built security guards froze in their tracks.

Eleanor’s cane struck the parquet floor with a sharp crack. "Alexander, do not be a fool! You are letting a manipulative servant tear apart this family! The Caldwells are threatening a lawsuit, the board of directors is holding an emergency meeting in two hours, and you are standing in a locked nursery playing house with a woman who belongs in a psych ward!"

Noah shrank against my chest, his small fingers digging into the fabric of my apron. I stood up slowly, lifting him into my arms, holding him as if he were the only tether keeping me attached to the earth. The realization that he was my biological son burned in my veins like liquid fire, turning every ounce of my former submission into pure, unyielding steel.

"I’m not a servant, Eleanor," I said, stepping forward so that I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Alexander. My voice didn't shake. "And I'm not leaving this house without my son."

Eleanor’s eyes flared with venomous disbelief. "Your son? You delusional little insect. You signed away every right you ever had five years ago!"

"She signed under false pretenses based on medical fraud orchestrated by you," Alexander cut in, his dark eyes fixed on his mother. He took a single step toward her, his imposing frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over the matriarch. "You bought my son like a piece of livestock, Mother. You paid Dr. Vance three million dollars to steal a child from a grieving mother whose world had just collapsed."

"I saved this family!" Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering. "Victoria was weak! Her womb was useless! She gave birth to a dead creature, and if the news had leaked that night, the Royce-Sterling saps-merger would have dissolved! We would have lost forty percent of our market capitalization in twenty-four hours! I did what had to be done to preserve our bloodline!"

"You didn't preserve a bloodline," Alexander hissed. "You committed a crime."

Eleanor sneered, regaining her composure with terrifying speed. She smoothed down her cashmere coat and looked at the two security guards. "You work for Sterling Enterprises, paid directly by the board of trustees—which I still chair. Take the child. If Mr. Sterling interferes, restrain him."

The two men exchanged hesitant glances, but the threat of losing their multi-million-dollar security contracts forced their hands. They stepped past Alexander, reaching out toward Noah.

Noah let out a blood-curdling scream, burying his face into my neck. "Mommy! Don't let them take me! Mommy!"

The word Mommy broke something inside Alexander.

Before the first guard could lay a finger on my sleeve, Alexander moved with terrifying speed. He grabbed the man by his throat, slamming him against the oak doorframe with enough force to rattle the heavy brass hinges. The second guard lunged forward, but Alexander drove a heavy elbow into the man’s solar plexus, dropping him to his knees, gasping for air.

"Get Noah out of here," Alexander commanded, not even looking back as he pinned the first guard to the wall. "Go to my private elevator at the end of the hall. Code is 1114. Go!"

I didn't hesitate. Holding Noah tightly against my chest, I sprinted past Eleanor. She reached out her claw-like hand to grab my hair, but I dodged her, her nails only catching the edge of my apron strap.

"You won't get away with this!" Eleanor screamed behind me, her voice echoing down the dusty corridor of the West Wing. "I own this city, Emma! By nightfall, you will be in a cell!"

I reached the stainless-steel doors of the private elevator, frantically typing the digits—1-1-1-4—into the keypad. November 14th. The date our lives were irrevocably altered.

The doors slid open. I jumped inside, pressing the button for the underground garage just as Alexander burst through the double doors at the end of the hall, his knuckles bleeding, his breath coming in heavy ragged gasps.

He slid into the elevator just before the doors sealed us in.

Noah was trembling violently in my arms, his small face pale, his breath hitching in choked sobs. "Daddy... is Grandmama bad?"

Alexander knelt down on the elevator floor, his large, blood-stained hand gently cupping the back of Noah’s head. His eyes met mine over our son’s shoulder, carrying an unspoken promise that made my heart ache.

"Grandmama is sick, buddy," Alexander whispered softly, his voice remarkably gentle despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. "And we are going somewhere safe."

The elevator dinged as it reached the subterranean garage. But as the doors opened, the harsh glare of red and blue emergency lights filled the concrete space.

Three black SUVs blocked the exit driveway. Standing beside them were four men in dark suits accompanied by Vanessa Caldwell’s father—Arthur Caldwell—and two officers from the NYPD.

"Alexander Sterling!" Arthur Caldwell’s voice boomed through the garage speaker system. "You are harboring a fugitive who has illegally detained my daughter’s reputation and kidnapped a minor! Step away from the servant and surrender the child!"
