Chapter 6 - The Interrogation of the Corridor

The sterile white lights of Lenox Hill’s fourth floor flickered under the weight of the lockdown. My security detail moved with cold, synchronized precision, securing the perimeter, sealing the stairwells, and placing the unconscious mercenary under heavy guard.

I knelt beside Maya Lin, who was still catching her breath against the wall of the X-ray archive room. Her knuckles were split, and a purple bruise was forming along her jaw where one of the operatives had struck her before she shattered the mop handle across his face.

“Can you stand, Maya?” I asked, extending a gloved hand to help her up.

She took my hand, wincing slightly as she rose to her feet. “I’m fine, Colonel. Just... adrenaline wearing off.”

“You didn't just survive an assault by professional operators,” I said, my voice laced with hard respect. “You engaged them with makeshift cover and bought enough time for my son to stay hidden. Where did you learn to move like that?”

Maya offered a tired, bitter half-smile. “My older brother was in the Marines. He taught me basic close-quarters defense before he deployed. Never thought I’d use it dodging cleaning carts and tactical killers in a Manhattan hospital.”

I nodded slowly, turning my attention to Marcus, who was kneeling beside the unconscious mercenary on the floor. Marcus peeled back the man’s tactical vest, searching for identification or encrypted comms.

“Found anything?” I asked.

“Scrubbed uniform, Colonel,” Marcus muttered, lifting a heavy-duty tactical radio off the mercenary’s belt. “No name tags, no serial numbers. But look at the encryption chip on this transceiver. This isn't standard domestic security gear. This is military-grade hardware used by shadow contractors.”

My jaw tightened. Whoever wanted my son dead—or taken—had deep pockets and even deeper government connections.
