Chapter 10 - The War Council

The bunker fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Marcus slammed his hand against the desk. “Damn it! They’re tracking our communications through metadata relays. We’re compromised.”

I turned away from the tactical screens, walking slowly over to where Maya sat wrapped in her blanket. She looked up at me, her eyes steady and resolute, showing no sign of the terror she had faced earlier that afternoon.

“They mentioned me, didn't they?” Maya asked quietly.

“They did,” I replied honestly. “Which means you can’t go back to your old life, Maya. You saved my son, and now you are part of this war.”

She stood up, letting the blanket drop to the floor. The fear in her eyes was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, sharp determination that mirrored my own.

“I didn't have much of a life to go back to anyway, Colonel,” Maya said, lifting her chin. “And nobody threatens a kid on my watch. What’s our next move?”

I looked back at Marcus and the armed tactical units locking down the bunker doors. The government thought they could hide behind classified files, black-budget projects, and shadowy assassins.

They had forgotten who I was. I was a General who had spent a lifetime training for impossible odds.

“We go on the offensive,” I said, drawing my sidearm and checking the magazine. “Lock and load.”
