Chapter 18 - The Final Strike

I looked around the room at the people standing with me: Marcus, my loyal executive officer; Maya, the brave janitor who had risked her life with a broken mop handle; General Vance, the mentor who had taught me how to lead; and my six-year-old son, sleeping peacefully in the cot behind us, resting safely under our protection.

“We aren't running anymore,” I said, turning to face them. “We’re going to hit them where they sleep. We pull the ledger, broadcast it to every military tribunal and international oversight committee simultaneously, and dismantle Aegis once and for all.”

Marcus cracked his knuckles, a grim smile crossing his face. “It’s a suicide mission, Colonel. The odds are impossible.”

“Then it’s a good thing we’re soldiers,” I replied.

Maya stepped up beside me, resting her hand on the edge of the tactical table. “Count me in, Colonel. I’m not letting anyone hurt Daniel, and I’m not letting those cowards win.”

Vance nodded approvingly, sliding a heavy metal case across the desk filled with encrypted access cards and specialized override tools. “Then let’s go to war.”
