Chapter 7 - The Arrival of the Golden SonBy Saturday morning, I was sitting in my new apartment, sipping freshly brewed coffee in complete silence. My living room was modest—just a cozy gray sofa, a mid-century coffee table, and large windows that let in the warm morning light. For the first time in three years, my chest didn't feel constricted by an invisible weight.

My phone, sitting on the counter, was muted, but the screen lit up continuously.

Derek - Missed Call (8)

Mom - Text Message: "You are destroying this family! Call me NOW!"

Dad - Text Message: "Naomi, please be reasonable. Your mother is hysterical."

I didn't reply. Instead, I sent a quick text to Sophie: Phase one complete. They’ve realized the trap.

Sophie replied instantly: Good. Let Derek settle in. The moment he tries to assert control, the reality of their situation will sink in.

Across town, Derek’s moving truck had arrived at Oak Ridge.

Through mutual family contacts and the inevitable neighborhood gossip, the scene unfolded just as I knew it would. Derek had arrived with two moving vans, his two energetic young sons, and a mountain of furniture expecting a spacious, fully prepared home.

Instead, he walked into a battleground.

My mother was frantic, locked in a heated phone call with her real estate lawyer, while my father sat at the kitchen table staring blankly at the Lis Pendens notice. Because I had moved my things out but refused to sign a waiver releasing my tenancy rights or my financial claims, the legal ownership of the home was now tethered to an open dispute.

Worse still, Derek had assumed he could immediately apply for a equity loan against our parents' house to fund his new business venture in Oak Ridge—a plan my mother had secretly agreed to months ago.

"What do you mean we can't leverage the house?" Derek’s voice echoed through the kitchen, overheard by the movers as they carried boxes inside. "Mom, you told me the home equity line was pre-approved!"

"It was!" Eleanor wailed. "Until she filed that document yesterday! The bank flagged the title this morning. They won't touch the property until Naomi releases the lien!"
