Chapter 19 - The Family DinnerA year after the night of the pot roast dinner, Arthur called Naomi at her office.

He didn't ask for money. He didn't ask her to come back home. He simply asked if he could take her out for lunch at a small café downtown near her office.

Naomi agreed.

They sat across from each other by the window, sipping warm tea. Arthur looked healthier than he had in years; the burden of hidden debts and unmanaged chaos had been replaced by a quiet, grounded calm.

"Your mother asks about you every day," Arthur said softly, his hands wrapped around his ceramic mug. "She knows you changed your number. She knows why."

"How is she?" Naomi asked gently, feeling no anger, only a mild, distant curiosity.

"She's learning," Arthur replied. "Derek is paying his share now. The boys are doing well in school. The house is quiet. But... it's empty without your spirit there, Naomi."

He paused, looking his daughter straight in the eye.

"I don't expect you to come back for holidays, Naomi. I don't expect you to forgive what was said at that table. But I wanted to tell you in person... I am so proud of the woman you are. You showed more strength than any of us deserved."

Naomi reached across the small table and squeezed her father’s hand.

"I forgive you, Dad," she said softly. "I really do. But forgiveness doesn't mean going back to how things were. It just means letting go of the pain."

Arthur nodded, a single tear slipping down his cheek as he smiled. "That's all I could ever ask for."
