Chapter 3 - Digital AshesI drove blindly into the dark, watching the streetlights of Oak Ridge stretch and blur into long trails of yellow light against my windshield. I drove until the suburban houses gave way to thick woods, finally pulling over into the gravel lot of a deserted public park overlooking the river.

The rain began to fall in heavy, rhythmic thuds against the roof of my sedan.

My hands were shaking slightly as I opened my laptop and connected to my phone's mobile hotspot. I logged into the shared household email account—an address we had created years ago to handle home repairs, utility bills, and insurance policies.

My intention was simply to pull up the receipts for the furnace installation, but as the inbox loaded, a subject line near the top caught my eye.

Subject: Room Setup Date: Three days ago

The sender was Derek.

I clicked on it.

Derek Vance: "Just make sure Naomi is out before the kids arrive on Saturday. I don’t want her negative energy ruining the vibe. The boys are already confused enough about the move. Also, clear out her closet so I have room for my work suits."

Underneath it was my mother’s reply, sent less than an hour later.

Eleanor Vance: "Don’t worry, Derek. I’ve already started packing her things into boxes while she’s at work. Once she’s finally out, this house can feel like family again. It will finally be ours."

I sat in the dark car, staring at the blue light of the screen.

They hadn't arrived at this decision over dinner tonight. Dinner wasn't a discussion; it was a performance, a victory lap after days of secret coordination. My mother had been going through my personal belongings, boxing up my life behind my back while I was working ten hours a day to pay for the roof over her head.

"It will finally be ours."

As if I were an intruder. As if I were a squatter who had forced her way in, rather than the benefactor who had saved them from financial ruin.

I closed the laptop screen slowly. The tears I thought were coming never materialized. In their place grew a cold, crystalline clarity. They wanted their house back. They wanted their golden son to step into the role of the lord of the manor.

They had no idea what they had just set in motion.
