Chapter 20 - Reclaiming the NarrativeTwo years after leaving Oak Ridge, Naomi stood on the front porch of a charming, sunlit bungalow overlooking the valley.

It was a home she had purchased entirely on her own—with her own savings, her own career earnings, and the returned $38,500 that had once been locked away in her parents' house. The title bore one name: Naomi Vance.

As the autumn breeze rustled the golden leaves in the yard, she walked inside. The house smelled of fresh cedar, lavender, and freshly brewed coffee. There were no hidden debts, no silent manipulations, no pot roast dinners prepared to soften the blow of a betrayal.

Sophie walked through the front door carrying a housewarming gift—a sleek, framed print of an abstract horizon line.

"To new beginnings," Sophie said, setting the gift on the fireplace mantel and handing Naomi a glass of sparkling cider. "Or rather, to a beginning that is entirely yours."

Naomi held up her glass, the afternoon sunlight catching the bubbles in the clear liquid.

She thought back to that night two years ago—the cold rain on her windshield, the blue light of her laptop screen, the heartbreaking word "Parasite" echoing in the warm dining room. She remembered the fear of walking away into the unknown with nothing but a briefcase full of receipts and a determination to survive.

She had lost a toxic dynamic, but she had gained herself.

"To independence," Naomi said, her voice clear, confident, and whole.

She took a sip, looked out over her new garden, and smiled. The story her mother had written for her was over. The story she had written for herself was just beginning.
