Chapter 5 - The Invitation ListBy Friday afternoon, the suburban estate had been transformed into a glittering showcase of high-society pretension.

Through the security cameras, I watched hired caterers stream through the front doors, carrying silver platters of caviar, artisanal cheeses, and cases of Dom Pérignon champagne. Floral arrangements of white orchids and crimson roses were placed strategically across the grand foyer and dining room, designed to impress the elite circle of local executives and socialites Grant had hastily invited for an impromptu “milestone celebration.”
Grant stood in front of the living room mirror, adjusting his silk tie with an expression of supreme, untouchable confidence. Vivian was draped in heirloom diamonds that had belonged to her side of the family, barking orders at the catering staff as if she had owned the estate for decades. Caleb and Marissa were busy uncorking champagne in the kitchen, laughing loudly as they debated how they were going to spend their newly acquired millions.
They were hosting a party to celebrate a victory built entirely on stolen property, forged signatures, and federal felony conspiracy.
I stood up from my downtown workstation, walked over to the sleek garment bag hanging in the corner of my office, and unzipped it.
Inside hung a custom-tailored, midnight-blue silk evening gown—classic, elegant, and sharp as a razor blade. Beside it rested a pair of black velvet heels and a velvet clutch containing my notary stamp, my federal forensic auditor credentials, and a sealed manila envelope bearing the crimson seal of the U.S. District Court.
My phone buzzed on the desk. A text message from Grant, sent at 4:30 PM:
“Missing you in Paris, sweetheart! Things are going so well here. Wish you could see how beautifully everything is falling into place.”
I looked at the message, a faint, cold smile touching my lips.
I tapped out my reply:
May you like
“Don’t worry, Grant. I wouldn't miss your party for the world.”
I hit send, slipped my phone into my velvet clutch, and walked out into the crisp afternoon air. The stage was set, the guests were arriving, and the final act was about to begin.
