Chapter 3 - The Gathering CloudsBy Thursday, the illusion of their grand victory was in full swing across local society circles.

Through social media feeds and local gossip channels that filtered down to my base contacts, Maribel was already broadcasting her triumph. She had posted a glowing photograph of herself standing in the villa’s grand foyer, draped in my mother’s pearls, holding another glass of champagne with the caption: “So blessed to finally settle into our permanent family estate. Hard work and proper roots always win out in the end! 🏡✨”

Comments poured in from distant relatives and family friends who had spent years ignoring me while praising Maribel’s “domestic grace.”

“So well-deserved, sweetie! Some people are just meant for wandering, but you were made for a real home.”

“Finally, the house is where it belongs!”

They thought they had won. They thought the game was over before the first quarter had even finished.

I spent Thursday evening at the base armory conducting final equipment inspections for our upcoming maritime security deployment rotations, my hands moving with mechanical precision over bolt carriers and targeting optics. My subordinates whispered respectfully around me, calling me Commander with genuine deference—a title I had earned with blood, sweat, and tactical excellence, not through forged signatures or emotional blackmail.

At 2000 hours, my phone chimed with a notification from the estate surveillance system.

I tapped the screen. A motion alert showed Grant and my father in the villa’s study, pouring scotch from a crystal decanter I had bought in Dublin after the Atlantic rescue operation.

“The board dinner tomorrow is going to seal my promotion to regional VP,” Grant was boasting, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “Once I announce that I control the Hayes family estate outright, the regional director won't have any excuse to pass me over for the partner track.”

“Just make sure Elena doesn’t cause a scene,” my father muttered, swirling his own glass nervously. “She’s always been... unpredictable since she joined the Navy. Too cold. Too calculating.”

“What can she possibly do, Dad?” Maribel laughed, walking into the study and leaning over Grant’s shoulder to steal a sip of his drink. “She’s a penniless officer living on a military salary. Without this house, she’s nothing. Let her freeze in her little base apartment.”

I watched the screen, my expression blank.

Two more days, I thought, locking my phone and sliding it into my pocket. Enjoy the view while it lasts.
