Chapter 14 - The Whispers of SocietyBy the weekend, the shockwaves of the arrest had fully rippled through Boston’s high-society and corporate networks.

The scandal had made the front page of the regional business journal: “CRASH OF A CORPORATE CLIMBER: Federal Indictments Reveal Multi-Million-Dollar Real Estate Fraud at Coastal Estate.”
The article detailed Grant’s immediate termination from his regional vice presidency, the freeze on my father’s retirement funds, and the humiliating public fallout at the ill-fated dinner party where federal marshals served the warrants in front of regional executives.
Phone calls and text messages from distant acquaintances, childhood family friends, and superficial relatives began flooding my inbox—people who had spent years ignoring my military career while praising Maribel’s domestic life.
“Dearest Elena, we were so shocked to hear the terrible news about your father and brother-in-law! We always knew you were the strong one in the family. Let’s grab lunch soon!”
I didn't answer a single one of them.

If they couldn't respect me when I was standing outside in the rain, they had no right to share the warmth of the fire when I reclaimed the house.
