Chapter 16 - The Plea and the FallThe federal courtroom in downtown Boston was bathed in the harsh, fluorescent glare of judicial accountability when the trial of United States v. Miller & Hart finally commenced.

Marcus Vance sat beside me in the observation gallery, his briefcase resting open on the mahogany partition. Across the aisle, the defense table looked like a monument to absolute ruin. Grant Miller sat slumped in his chair, his custom suit hanging loosely from a frame that had lost all its arrogance, while my father stared blankly at the polished wood of the defense counsel's table, his posture crushed beneath the weight of his own calculated betrayals.

Federal Judge Holloway adjusted his reading glasses, scanning the final sentencing recommendations and the signed plea agreements submitted by the prosecution.

“In light of the comprehensive forensic audit reports, the unrefuted digital evidence, and the formal guilty pleas entered on counts of wire fraud, interstate forgery, and financial exploitation,” Judge Holloway’s voice rang clearly through the silent courtroom, “this court finds both defendants fully culpable for a premeditated scheme to defraud.”

The gavel struck with a sharp, echoing crack.

“Grant Miller, you are hereby sentenced to twelve years in a federal correctional facility without the possibility of parole for the first six years. Arthur Hart, in light of your cooperation and age, you are sentenced to seven years.”

A low, wheezing sob escaped my father’s lips as the federal marshals stepped forward, their handcuffs flashing in the courtroom lights. They didn't look at me as they were led away. The golden family legacy they had sacrificed everything to fake had vanished into a concrete cell.
