Chapter 7 - The Shift in the Room

As I moved toward the center of the ballroom, the atmosphere began to change in subtle waves.

Military men and women tend to recognize rank long before they recognize faces. It’s an instinct honed by years of discipline—scanning epaulets, noting insignia, respecting authority.

The first person to notice me was a retired colonel standing near the bar. His eyes dropped to my shoulders, caught the gleam of the silver stars, and snapped back up to my face with a sharp, involuntary jolt of recognition. He stopped mid-sentence, his drink hovering halfway to his mouth.

Then a defense contractor talking with Kevin blinked, his gaze drifting past Kevin’s shoulder to lock onto my uniform. He nudged his companion.

Within seconds, a quiet, spreading ripple of silence cut through the chatter near the front of the room.

Kevin, who had been laughing at something my father said, noticed the sudden drop in conversation. He turned around, expecting to see a late-arriving VIP or perhaps a hotel manager with a complaint.

Instead, he saw me.

His smug smile froze instantly, twisting into a look of absolute, uncomprehending shock.

My mother followed Kevin’s gaze. Her crystal wineglass slipped slightly in her hand, the amber liquid sloshing against the rim as her eyes widened in horror.

And my father—Lieutenant Colonel Victor Ross, retired—stopped talking about his glorious third tour of duty, turning slowly to see why his audience had suddenly stopped listening to him.
