Chapter 16 - The Unwanted Visitor

Two weeks after the Diamond Jubilee, the fallout had finally settled into a cold, distant silence. My family had retreated into the wounded echo chamber of their own making, realizing that no amount of spin could rewrite what two hundred witnesses and a three-star general had seen.
I was at my desk reviewing a logistics report when my executive officer, Major Vance, knocked softly on the open door and stepped inside.
“General Ross,” he said, his expression carefully neutral. “You have a visitor at the gate. Refusing to leave.”
I looked up from my tablet, raising an eyebrow. “At the base gate? Who is it?”
Major Vance hesitated for a second. “Your brother, Kevin. He claims it’s an urgent family matter, and he’s refusing to clear the security checkpoint until you agree to speak with him.”
A cold, heavy calm settled over me. Kevin—who hadn't spoken two words to me all evening except to mock my clothes—was now standing outside a secure military installation demanding an audience, assuming his usual corporate entitlement would magically grant him military access.
“Tell base security to escort him off federal property immediately,” I said, my voice ice-cold. “If he attempts to re-enter or linger near the perimeter, have him cited for trespassing.”

“Yes, Ma’am,” Major Vance replied, suppressing a slight grin before turning on his heel to execute the order.
