Chapter 13 - Back at Headquarters

By midnight, the sedan had passed through the secure gates of the regional command base.

The quiet, orderly hum of the headquarters building was a welcome contrast to the artificial glamour and toxic posturing of the hotel ballroom. Duty officers saluted as I walked through the corridors toward my office, their expressions professional and focused.

On my desk sat a stack of encrypted operational reports regarding the upcoming joint-forces logistics deployment across the Pacific sector.

I unbuttoned my service coat, draped it carefully over the back of my leather chair, and sat down at the terminal.

Before diving into the operational data, my private email notification pinged. It was a message from General Sterling’s office:

> Major General Ross,

> I want to personally commend your exemplary service and apologize for the sheer awkwardness of your father’s introduction this evening. You’ve earned every star on your uniform through grit and brilliance. If you ever need someone to set the record straight with your family—or anyone else—let me know. Outstanding work tonight.

> — General Arthur Sterling

I smiled, a genuine, quiet expression of gratitude, and typed a brief reply: “Thank you, General. The mission always comes first.”

I locked my screen, pulled the first operational file toward me, and dove back into the work that mattered.
