Chapter 5 - The Reconstitution

Back in the suite, the mirror reflected a stranger to the people downstairs.

I unzipped the garment bag and carefully lifted out the midnight-blue service dress coat. The dark fabric was immaculate, tailored precisely to my frame. I slid my arms into the sleeves, feeling the familiar weight of the wool and the quiet authority stitched into every seam.

I fastened the heavy gold buttons down the front, smoothing the fabric over my chest—right where the red wine stain had ruined my civilian dress just twenty minutes prior.

Next came the ribbons and badges. Tour of duty ribbons. Campaign medals. Commendation medals with oak leaf clusters. Badges representing years of strategic command, operational deployment, and joint-forces leadership.

Finally, I reached for the shoulder boards.

Two silver stars, polished to a mirror finish, rested squarely on each epaulet.

A two-star general.

Major General Elena Ross.

For years, my family had assumed my silence about my career meant I was stuck in some dead-end desk job, pushing papers in an administrative cubicle because I lacked the ambition or the brilliance of my golden-boy brother. They had never bothered to look closer at my assignments, never asked about my deployments, and certainly never imagined that the quiet daughter they routinely dismissed had spent the last decade rising through the ranks of the United command structure.

I pinned my garrison cap to my belt, checked my reflection one last time, and adjusted my posture.

Downstairs, the Diamond Jubilee was reaching its peak. General Sterling was scheduled to give a toast to my father in less than ten minutes. The room was packed with the exact elite circle of retired commanders and corporate executives my father desperately wanted to impress.

I turned away from the mirror, walked out of the suite, and pressed the button for the grand ballroom elevator.

The audit of my family was about to begin, and this time, I wasn't going to stay quiet.
