Chapter 17 - The First Blueprint

By late January, winter had blanketed the city in a soft layer of white snow.
Inside the sunlit third-floor studio of Weber Engineering, the atmosphere was charged with energy. Blueprints, material swatches, and 3D digital renderings lined the heavy glass drafting tables.
Joselyn stood at the head of a massive conference table, presenting the final structural schematics for the downtown municipal library renovation to our senior engineering board and city council liaisons.
“By utilizing a glass-reinforced steel canopy over the central atrium,” Joselyn explained, pointing her laser pointer at a breathtaking 3D render, “we maximize natural light while maintaining structural integrity during heavy winter snow loads. The open floor plan creates an accessible, inviting space for the entire community.”
The city council representative leaned back, looking thoroughly impressed. “It’s brilliant, Joselyn. It honors the historical architecture of the original building while bringing it boldly into the future.”
I sat near the back of the room, taking notes in my leather portfolio.
Over the past two months, Joselyn had integrated her independent design firm with Weber Engineering, creating a multi-disciplinary division that bridged architectural design and structural engineering. The partnership had already landed two major regional contracts, but watching her command the room with natural authority brought me a joy that money could never buy.
When the meeting concluded and the council members shook her hand, Joselyn walked over to my desk, leaning against the edge with a wide, glowing smile.
“How did I do, boss?” she teased softly.
I looked up at her, my heart swelling with pride. “You didn't just do well, Joselyn. You built something extraordinary.”

“We built it, Mom,” she corrected gently, touching the gold ring hanging from the chain around my neck. “Together.”
