Chapter 11 - The Fall of Vance Marketing

The arrest of Derek Vance in the lobby of Weber Engineering set off a cascading collapse that stripped away every remaining piece of his fraudulent life.
By Monday morning, First National Bank had officially canceled his commercial line of credit and turned over his entire file to the District Attorney’s white-collar crime division. Lacking the $150,000 cash infusion he had desperately relied on to stall his creditors, Vance Marketing LLC went into complete financial cardiac arrest.
David Chen called me into his office at 2:00 PM to review the liquidation proceedings.
"Derek’s landlord served a formal eviction notice on his downtown office space this morning," David said, sliding a certified court order across the desk. "The sheriff’s office seized all company equipment, servers, and office furniture to auction off for back rent. His primary sub-contractors have also filed joint civil suits for unpaid wages."
"Has he posted bail?" I asked.
"He tried," David chuckled grimly. "His brother attempted to put up his property in Crestview as collateral, but the state prosecutor flagged the deed because of the fraudulent retainer documents Derek used on his loan application. He’s stuck in county holding pending his formal arraignment."
I looked out the window at the city skyline. For months, Derek had paraded around town wearing handmade suits, driving luxury leased cars, and treating everyone around him like chess pieces in his grand ascension. Now, stripped of my money and his false credentials, he was revealed to be nothing more than a petty con man in a prison jumpsuit.
"What about his personal assets?" I inquired.
"His sports car was repossessed Friday night," David replied. "His personal checking account has a balance of $142. And the landlord of his residential loft has already changed the locks and listed the unit for lease."

"Good," I said, standing up. "Let the system finish what he started."
