Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

Derek looked down at the legal papers in his hands, his fingers trembling violently as he realized the sheer scale of the trap he had walked into.
Behind the glass wall of my corner office, I stood watching the scene play out, surrounded by Sandra Okafor, David Chen, and two detectives from the city’s financial crimes unit who had been quietly waiting inside to execute his formal arrest warrant.
The office doors behind Derek opened, and the two police officers stepped into the lobby.
"Derek Vance?" the senior detective asked, stepping forward with handcuffs in hand. "You are under arrest for attempted grand larceny, identity theft, and felony forgery."
Derek backed up against the reception desk, his eyes darting frantically between the officers, Joselyn, and me standing behind the glass.
"This is a mistake!" he yelled as the officers seized his arms, forcing his hands behind his back. "She authorized everything! Ask her daughter! Joselyn, tell them!"
Joselyn turned her back on him, walking calmly toward my office door without offering him a single glance.
The click of the handcuffs echoed through the silent lobby, signaling the final, permanent end of Derek Vance's fraudulent ambition.

Six months later.
The early spring sun warmed the stone courtyard of the state university's engineering campus.
A crowd of two hundred students, faculty members, and community leaders sat in rows of white folding chairs facing a wooden podium decorated with fresh flowers.
I stood at the podium wearing a navy silk suit, looking out at the bright, hopeful faces in the audience. Sitting in the front row was Joselyn, looking vibrant, healthy, and happier than she had been in years, her eyes shining with genuine pride as she watched me. Beside her sat Sandra and David, smiling warmly.
"It is my distinct honor today," I spoke into the microphone, my voice resonant and strong, "to officially announce the establishment of the Robert Weber Memorial Engineering Endowment."
The crowd applauded warmly.
"This $50,000 permanent scholarship fund," I continued, "will provide full tuition and housing support for young, independent women pursuing degrees in structural engineering and technological innovation. It is built on a simple foundation: that true security isn't something given to you by someone else. It is something you build with your own hands, your own integrity, and your own unwavering strength."
After the ceremony concluded, Joselyn walked up to me on the sunlit lawn, wrapping her arms around me in a warm, tight hug.
"That was beautiful, Mom," she whispered. "Dad would have loved every second of it."

I looked down at the gold wedding band resting against my chest, then back at my daughter—a woman who had reclaimed her life, her independence, and her future.
"He would have been proud of both of us, Joselyn," I said, taking her hand as we walked together across the vibrant green campus toward a future that belonged entirely to us.
