Chapter 13 - A Knock at the Door

On a rainy Thursday evening three weeks later, as the autumn winds swept through the trees in our front yard, the doorbell rang.

Joselyn was upstairs working, so I walked to the front foyer, checked the security monitor, and opened the heavy oak door.

Standing on the porch beneath a leaking black umbrella was an elderly woman wearing a faded trench coat. Her eyes were swollen, her posture stooped, and her hands trembled as she clutched a small leather handbag against her coat.

It was Evelyn Vance—Derek’s mother.

I had met her only twice before, during an awkward dinner at an expensive steakhouse where she had spent two hours bragging about her family’s old-money heritage while letting me pay the three-hundred-dollar bill.

"Frances..." she choked out, her voice trembling against the rain. "Please... please hear me out."

I stood firmly in the doorway, keeping my expression neutral. "You have three minutes, Evelyn."

Evelyn stepped onto the porch, tears spilling down her wrinkled cheeks. "Derek is in jail, Frances! They’ve set his bail at fifty thousand dollars cash, and the prosecutors are talking about five years in state prison! He’s a good boy... he just made a foolish mistake because he wanted to give Joselyn a wonderful life!"

I let out a low, cold laugh that made Evelyn flinch.

"A mistake, Evelyn?" I asked, my voice cutting through the sound of the rain. "Your son forged my signature on a legal document. He attempted to steal $40,000 from a venue deposit. He lied to a federal bank using fake corporate retainers. And he forced my daughter to send me a message cutting me out of her life so he could rob us blind."

"He was desperate!" Evelyn wailed, clasping her hands together in a desperate prayer. "His business was failing! If you could just drop the civil suit and speak to the bank... tell them it was a family misunderstanding... we can pay you back over time!"

I looked at the woman standing on my porch, seeing where Derek had learned his complete lack of accountability.

"Evelyn," I said quietly, leaning forward so she could see the absolute iron behind my eyes. "Your son is not in prison because of a misunderstanding. He is in prison because he was a criminal who targeted the wrong family. My attorney will not drop a single charge. And if you step onto my property again, I will have you arrested for trespass."

I shut the door firmly in her face, locked the deadbolt with a solid click, and walked back into my warm, quiet house.
