Chapter 8 - The Cracking Foundation

By 3:00 a.m., the story had begun to leak through the small-town channels of Grand County.

In the private consultation room down the hall from the ER, Richard Harrison was losing his mind. He paced the small room, shouting into his cell phone at his high-powered corporate defense attorney in Denver.

"I don't care what time it is, Arthur!" Richard roared into the receiver. "They’ve got Tyler in an interrogation room at the sheriff's station! They aren't letting me see him! They’re talking about felony charges!"

Eleanor sat in the corner of the room, her eyes wide and blank, clutching her coffee cup with two hands. "Richard... what if it's true?" she whispered, her voice hollow.

Richard spun around, pointing a furious finger at his wife. "Shut up, Eleanor! Don't you dare start that nonsense! Tyler is a good boy! He’s an athlete! He has a future! Olivia has been plotting this—she’s always been jealous of him, always looking for ways to tear him down!"

"She can't move her legs, Richard!" Eleanor suddenly screamed, her voice shattering the quiet room as she finally broke. "The doctor showed us the bruises! The MRI showed a broken bone in her back from two years ago! Do you remember two years ago? Do you remember when she laid on the couch for three weeks crying, and you told her she was being a baby?!"

"I said shut up!" Richard yelled, stepping closer, his face turning dark purple. "If this gets out, my firm is finished! Tyler’s scholarship is gone! Do you have any idea what this will do to us?!"

"Is that all you care about?!" a fierce voice barked from the doorway.

Richard and Eleanor whipped around.

Aunt Caroline was standing in the open doorway, her arms crossed over her chest, staring at them with utter contempt. Behind her stood two hospital security officers, making sure Richard stayed inside the room.

"Caroline," Eleanor sobbed, taking a step toward her sister. "Caroline, please... how is she?"

"She is starting to regain feeling in her toes, no thanks to either of you," Caroline said coldly. "And she is currently giving a full, recorded statement to the child protective investigators and the state police."

Richard took an aggressive step toward Caroline. "You orchestrated this, didn't you? You always hated how successful my family was! You’ve been whispering in that girl's ear—"

"I didn't have to whisper anything, Richard," Caroline interrupted, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet calm. "You did this to yourselves. You built a house out of lies, vanity, and violence, and you used your daughter as the punching bag to keep it standing. Well, the house just collapsed."

"I am her father!" Richard roared. "I have rights! I will hire the best legal team in the state, and I will have Olivia brought back home the second she is discharged!"

Caroline smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that made Richard pause mid-breath.

"You don't have a daughter anymore, Richard," Caroline said softly. "Because thirty minutes ago, I signed the emergency protective custody papers with Child Protective Services. And tomorrow morning, my attorney is filing for emergency legal guardianship. You will never put your hands on that girl again."
