Chapter 13 - The Mother's Confession

"Olivia... please don't hang up," Eleanor sobbed into the line. "I’m calling from a payphone near the grocery store. Your father doesn't know I’m calling."
I held my breath, my knuckles turning white against the cold glass of the phone. "Mom? You aren't supposed to call me."
"I know... I know, baby, and I’m so sorry," she wept, her voice trembling so violently I could hear the rattling of the payphone receiver against her cheek. "I just... I had to hear your voice. I had to know if you were okay."
"Why now, Mom?" I asked, my tone sharp, carrying the weight of seventeen years of abandonment. "Where were you when I was lying at the bottom of the stairs? Where were you two years ago when I couldn't get off the couch?"
A long, painful silence stretched across the line, filled only by the crackle of static and the sound of my mother’s ragged breathing.
"I was terrified, Olivia," Eleanor whispered softly—a confession that sounded like a dying breath. "I was so terrified of your father."
I froze. "What?"
"Richard... Richard wasn't always like this, but when his firm started failing five years ago, he changed," Eleanor confessed, the words spilling out of her in a desperate, uncontrollable torrent. "He became obsessed with control. With perfection. He couldn't handle any failure. When Tyler started acting out, getting aggressive... Richard didn't discipline him. He encouraged it. He turned Tyler into his little mirror image."
"And you just let him?" I choked out, a fierce, burning anger rising in my chest. "You let him turn Tyler into a monster? You watched them hurt me and you said nothing!"
"Because if they weren't hurting you, Richard was screaming at me!" Eleanor sobbed hysterically. "I was a coward, Olivia! I watched my own daughter be battered and bruised in her own home because I was too weak to stand up to my husband! I thought... I convinced myself that if I played along, if I blamed you, if I made it seem like you were just 'dramatic,' the family would stay together!"
I sat on the dark porch, the cold mountain air biting at my skin, listening to the woman who was supposed to protect me admit that she had sacrificed me to save herself.
"I don't hate you, Mom," I said softly, tears flowing silently down my face. "But I can't save you. And I can't let you drag me back into that house."
"I know," Eleanor whispered. "I... I just wanted to tell you that I gave a statement to Prosecutor Reyes this morning."
My breath hitched. "What statement?"
"I told them about the night in the basement two years ago," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a firm, resolute quiet. "I told them I saw the doorframe. I told them I heard you screaming. I told them Richard threw away your medical ice packs and threatened to take away my credit cards if I took you to the ER."
A profound silence fell between us.
"Mom..."
"I can't fix what I broke, Olivia," Eleanor sobbed. "But I won't let them ruin the rest of your life. I love you, baby. I’m so sorry."
