Chapter 7 - The Statement

Inside Trauma Bay 1, the silence was broken only by the soft hum of the IV pump administering high-dose anti-inflammatories directly into my bloodstream.

I lay flat on the bed, staring up at the white ceiling tiles. The cold numbness in my legs had begun to shift—a tiny, prickling sensation, like thousands of microscopic needles poking the soles of my feet. It was painful, but it was proof that the nerves were waking up.

Aunt Caroline sat beside me, her hands wrapped around mine, holding on as if she were anchoring me to the earth.

The yellow curtain was pulled back, and Deputy Rodriguez walked in. She removed her Stetson hat, held it under her arm, and offered me a soft, respectful nod.

"Hello, Olivia," Rodriguez said gently. "I’m Deputy Rodriguez. How are you feeling?"

"It... it prickles," I whispered, my voice weak. "My feet."

"That’s the swelling coming down, sweetie," Aunt Caroline whispered, squeezing my fingers. "The medicine is working."

Deputy Rodriguez pulled a small digital voice recorder from her tactical vest and set it on the bedside tray. She pulled up a chair and sat down, leaning forward so her eyes were level with mine.

"Olivia," Rodriguez began softly, "I’m going to record this conversation. I need to ask you some very difficult questions about what happened tonight, and what has happened to you in the past. You are safe here. Your father and brother are outside, and they will not be allowed anywhere near this room. Do you understand?"

I swallowed hard, looking at the tiny red light on the voice recorder.

"I... I understand," I squeaked out.

"Can you tell me what happened at the lake house tonight?"

I took a shaky breath. I closed my eyes and pictured the oak landing at the top of the stairs. The smell of alcohol on Tyler’s breath. The cruel smirk on his face.

"I wanted to go to my room," I said, tears beginning to trace paths down my temples. "Tyler blocked the hallway. He wouldn't let me pass. I asked him to move... I tried to step around him. And then... he slammed both hands into my shoulders and shoved me backward."

Aunt Caroline let out a soft, furious hiss, but Rodriguez remained completely calm, her eyes fixed on me. "And what happened when you fell?"

"I fell down the steps. My back hit the edges. I hit the stone floor at the bottom. I told them I couldn't feel my legs." I bit my lip, my voice cracking. "Dad told me to walk it off. He said I was doing it for sympathy. Tyler laughed."

Rodriguez’s jaw tightened, a muscle flexing in her cheek. "Okay, Olivia. Thank you. Now, I need to ask you about the injury Dr. Patel found on your MRI—the old fracture in your mid-spine."

The room grew suffocatingly quiet.

"Who caused that fracture, Olivia?" Rodriguez asked gently. "And when did it happen?"

I stared at the ceiling. The fear that had kept me silent for two years tried to claw its way back up my throat, telling me to lie, telling me to protect my family name, telling me that nobody would believe me anyway.

Then I looked at Aunt Caroline. I saw the tears in her eyes, the fierce love shining in her face, and I realized I wasn't alone anymore.

"It was two years ago," I whispered clearly. "In the basement of our house in Denver. Tyler brought his friends over. They were drinking. I asked them to turn the music down."

I paused, wiping a tear with the back of my hand.

"Tyler got mad. He dragged me into the hallway and slammed my back into the metal frame of the laundry room door. I heard something pop. I couldn't stand up. When my parents came home, I told them I was hurt. Dad said I was trying to ruin Tyler’s football season. They wouldn't take me to a doctor. They told me to stop whining."

Rodriguez reached out, hit the stop button on the voice recorder with a sharp click, and stood up.

"Thank you, Olivia," Rodriguez said, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling resolve. "That’s all I need for now. You rest."

She turned toward the doorway, pulling her radio from her belt. As she stepped into the hallway, I heard her speak into the microphone:
