Chapter 6 - The Knock on the Door

The doorbell chimed a second time, heavier and more persistent than the first.
Daniel stood frozen in the center of the kitchen, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The arrogance that had fueled his evening entrance had completely evaporated, replaced by the primitive panic of a cornered animal realizing the trap had already snapped shut.
“Go on,” I repeated, my voice steady and completely devoid of emotion. “They don’t like to be kept waiting. Especially when they’re carrying federal summons.”
He swallowed hard, wiping his sweating palms against his trousers, and took two hesitant steps toward the front hallway.
When he pulled open the heavy oak door, there were no process servers in tactical gear, but the reality standing on the porch was just as lethal to his illusions.
Standing under the porch light was Mr. Levin, my grandfather’s attorney, accompanied by a tall, impeccably dressed man holding a leather folio case.
“Mr. Daniel Hayes?” the tall man asked, his voice sharp and professional.
Daniel gripped the edge of the doorframe. “Wh-what is this about?”
“My name is Marcus Vance—no relation to your wife,” the man said smoothly, stepping past Daniel into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. “I am senior legal counsel for Apex Commercial Credit. You have been formally served with a default judgment notice, an immediate commercial asset freeze, and a preliminary injunction regarding encumbered residential property.”
Papers were slid into Daniel’s trembling hands.
From the kitchen doorway, I watched him look down at the header page. The bold, black letters stared back up at him: APEX COMMERCIAL CREDIT v. HAYES CUSTOM REMODELING AND DANIEL HAYES.
“This... this is a mistake,” Daniel stammered, his voice cracking. “My wife... Claire and I are working with our financial advisors. We’re liquidating private assets to cover this—”
“Your wife,” Marcus interrupted, turning his head to look directly at me as I stepped into the hallway, “has already filed complete financial disclosure affidavits with our compliance division. Furthermore, she has petitioned the court for total legal indemnification and full title assignment of this residence to clear her name from your fraudulent liabilities.”
Daniel whipped his head around, his eyes wide with absolute betrayal. He stared at me as if I were a stranger who had just pulled off a mask.
“You... you did this?” he whispered, his voice shaking with fury. “You went behind my back?”
May you like
“I didn't go behind your back, Daniel,” I replied, stepping up beside Mr. Levin. “I walked right through your front door and turned on the lights.”
