Chapter 19 - The Legacy of Arthur Vance

On Saturday morning, I drove out to the quiet, rolling hills of the town cemetery just north of the city.
The morning mist was still clinging to the green grass as I walked down the stone pathway toward my grandfather’s headstone. I carried a small bouquet of white chrysanthemums—his favorite—and knelt down, clearing away a few fallen leaves from the granite marker.
Arthur Vance: Beloved Grandfather, Honest Man, Merchant of Integrity.
I placed the flowers gently against the stone, tracing the carved letters with my fingers.
“Hey, Grandpa,” I whispered softly into the quiet morning air. “I finished the audit.”
I sat back on my heels, smiling as the sun broke through the canopy of oak trees overhead, warming my face with golden light.
“They tried to take it all,” I continued, my voice steady and clear. “They thought compliance meant weakness, and they thought your hard work was just a slush fund for their entitlement. But they forgot who taught me how to read a balance sheet.”
I thought about the $118,000 sitting safely in the trust account—not just as money, but as a symbol of the unyielding standard he had set for me. A standard of honesty, self-respect, and absolute clarity.
“I kept the house, Grandpa,” I whispered. “And more importantly, I kept myself.”

I stayed there for a long time, listening to the wind rustle through the leaves and the distant chirping of birds, feeling an absolute, unbreakable sense of peace settle deep into my bones.
