Chapter 10 - A New Audit

By Friday morning, the moving trucks were gone, the locks had been completely replaced with high-security deadbolts, and the gray drizzle had cleared away to reveal a brilliant, crisp autumn sun streaming through the kitchen windows.
I stood at the kitchen island, pouring a fresh cup of coffee, and looked out over the backyard where the golden leaves of the maple tree danced in the morning breeze.
My phone buzzed on the counter.
It was an email notification from Mr. Levin. I opened it and read the single line of text attached to the finalized decree:
> Case Closed. All assets secured, liabilities cleared, and title transferred. Congratulations on a flawless audit, Claire.
I smiled, locked my phone, and set it down on the polished oak wood.
For seven years, I had believed that love meant enduring, that marriage meant carrying someone else’s debt, and that keeping the peace meant letting others write your story.
Standing here now in a house that belonged only to me, with my grandfather’s legacy safely secured and my professional expertise put to the ultimate test, I finally knew the truth.
