Chapter 19 - The Anniversary of Grace

July 14th marked three years since Nora had passed away.
In the past, the date had been an anniversary of unmitigated sorrow—a day Gabriel spent locked in his office, drowning in guilt over his absences and the helplessness of watching cancer steal his wife away.
This year felt different.
Early in the morning, Gabriel and Amelia drove out to the tranquil hilltop cemetery overlooking the valley. They carried a basket filled with fresh white lilies and lavender stems—Nora’s absolute favorites.
The morning sun filtered through the canopy of ancient oak trees, casting dappled shadows across the marble headstone.
Gabriel knelt beside the stone, clearing away a few stray fallen leaves, while Amelia gently placed the bouquet in the stone vase.
"Hi, Mom," Amelia whispered, resting her small hand against the cool carved lettering of Nora's name. "I graduated from elementary school last month. I got the arts award. Dad said you would have loved my watercolor paintings."
Gabriel placed his hand over his daughter's, feeling the steady, vibrant pulse of life beneath her skin.
"We're doing okay, Nora," Gabriel spoke softly, his voice steady and clear in the quiet morning air. "The house is full of laughter again. Amelia is strong, brilliant, and fiercely independent. I finally learned what it means to truly be home."

There was no bitter ache in his chest anymore, only a profound, enduring gratitude for the years they had shared and the family they had protected. They stayed for a long while, sharing quiet memories beneath the whispering trees before walking back down the hill hand in hand.
