Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Promise

Christmas morning at 442 Oakridge Lane was filled with the bright, unbridled magic that had been missing for too many years.

The living room was crowded with colorful packages, stockings hung neatly by the mantel, and the scent of pine needles and cinnamon filled the air. Amelia bounded down the stairs at 6:30 AM, shouting for Gabriel to wake up, exactly as a ten-year-old child should.

They spent hours opening presents, sharing pancakes, and playing board games on the living room rug. There was no tension, no fear, and no invisible rules governing how they occupied their own home. Every chair at the dining room table was occupied by love, laughter, and security.

As the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the snow-covered lawn, Gabriel sat on the back porch wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, holding a mug of hot cider.

The door opened softly, and Amelia stepped outside, holding a small, wrapped box tied with a silver ribbon.

"What's this?" Gabriel smiled, setting his mug down.

"Open it," she grinned, handing it to him.

Gabriel carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the cardboard lid. Inside sat a brand-new, customized luggage tag made of thick brown leather, embossed with gold lettering: Gabriel Hart - Dad. Home is where you are.

Gabriel felt a sudden, sharp lump form in his throat. He looked up at his daughter, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

"I made it at school during art club," Amelia explained, her cheeks flushing slightly. "It's for your briefcase. So that whenever you have to go away for work... you'll remember you always have to come back here."

Gabriel stood up, pulled his daughter into a fierce, suffocating embrace, and buried his face in her hair.

"I'm not going away, sweetheart," he choked out, his voice thick with emotion. "I am always coming back right here."
