Chapter 14 - The Winter Snows

By December, the New England winter arrived with a vengeance, blanketing suburban Connecticut in deep, pristine layers of white snow.

For Amelia, the snow meant one thing: building the ultimate snowman in the front yard, complete with a carrot nose, an old wool scarf, and a crooked top hat.

Gabriel watched from the living room window as she danced around the lumpy figure, laughing as Biscuit bounded through the snowdrifts, kicking up white powder into the crisp air. The warmth inside the house matched the peace that had finally settled into their family dynamic.

The preliminary court hearings for Marlene’s criminal trial had concluded, and the judge had officially denied bail due to the severe flight risk and documented asset manipulation. The trial date was set for early February. Knowing that the legal battle was drawing to a close allowed Gabriel to focus entirely on creating joyful, secure memories for his children.

Later that evening, as snowflakes drifted past the glowing windows, Gabriel and Amelia sat on the living room rug by a crackling fireplace.

Amelia was busy stringing popcorn for the Christmas tree while Gabriel tuned his old acoustic guitar—an instrument he hadn't touched since Nora passed away.

"Daddy, do you remember when Mom taught me how to make these paper snowflakes?" Amelia asked softly, holding up a delicate white cutout.

Gabriel stopped tuning, looking over at her. Her dark hair was tied back in a simple ribbon, and the firelight cast a golden glow across her face.

"I remember," Gabriel smiled gently. "She always made them too intricate, and they'd tear right down the middle."

"Just like mine do," Amelia laughed, holding up a torn edge.

Gabriel set the guitar aside, shifting closer to her on the rug. He reached out and gently touched her shoulder. "Amelia... your grandfather came by the house a few weeks ago."

Amelia’s hands froze on the popcorn string. Her expression closed off slightly, the carefree joy dimming into caution. "Did he?"

"He dropped off an old photo album," Gabriel said carefully, measuring every word. "Pictures of your mom, and pictures of you when you were little. It’s sitting on the shelf in my office. I haven't looked through it yet."

Amelia looked down at the floor, her fingers twisting the string. "Do I have to look at it?"

"No, sweetheart. You never have to do anything you aren't comfortable with," Gabriel assured her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "It's entirely your choice. When you're ready, if you're ever ready, we can look at it together. If not, it stays on the shelf."

She leaned her head against his chest, letting out a soft sigh of relief. "Can we wait until after Christmas?"

"We can wait as long as you want," Gabriel whispered, kissing the top of her head.
