Chapter 17 - Closing the Ledger

The final chapter of the financial restitution arrived in a thick manila envelope from the state attorney’s office on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
I opened it at my desk, looking over the formal decree. The court-appointed forensic audit of the Vance estate had officially concluded. The hidden offshore accounts and illegally diverted property holdings had been fully recovered and reallocated into an independent trust bearing my name and Lily’s—completely shielded from anyone who might ever try to weaponize family name or wealth again.
My mother’s estate had been heavily downsized to pay back legal debts and court-mandated restitution. She was now living quietly in a modest, nondescript apartment on the far outskirts of the city, completely isolated by the very culture of secrecy and elitism she had spent a lifetime enforcing.
She had tried calling my cell phone once, weeks ago. I hadn't answered. The line had simply rung out into the void until voicemail caught it, and I had blocked the number permanently minutes later.
There was no hatred left in my heart—only the cold, clear realization that some relationships cannot be salvaged because they were never built on truth in the first place.
I slid the legal documents into a filing cabinet, locked the drawer, and pushed the key into the back of my desk.
